Natural Rubber is derived from the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree and vulcanized, natural rubber served as the exclusive polymer for O-rings until the emergence of synthetic elastomers in the 1930s. Although its usage has significantly declined since then, natural rubber boasts several commendable properties, such as minimal heat generation, high resilience and elongation, effective abrasion resistance, and flexibility in low temperatures.
The unique ability of natural rubber to strain crystallize contributes to its impressive combination of high tensile strength and tear resistance. Additionally, it exhibits a minimal compression set. However, it does have a notable drawback, as it lacks resistance to oils and solvents. Furthermore, the presence of double bonds in its primary polymer chain renders natural rubber susceptible to deterioration from exposure to oxygen, ozone, and UV light.
